An introduction to our next performance for our English speaking followers.
“Platero Y yo”: a necessary book for the soul which won the author, Juan Ramon Jiménez, the Nobel Prize for Literature. In the text, joy and sorrow are very easily recognizable, very much like the two hairy ears of the much loved donkey. The pages of this extraordinary book transport us to the landscapes of Old Andalusia, through the tame soul and the sweet spirit of this Moorish breed of donkey.
Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, one of the foremost guitar composers in the twentieth century, was inspired by the poems and set them to music. They can be described as musical commentaries, reinforcing and complementing Jiménez’s prose, and matching the changing moods. The guitar paints musical pictures of birds, village festivals and dancing, the colors of the sky at twilight, at times using such techniques as staccato to represent trotting, harmonics in an address to the moon, habanera rhythms, and a toccata to welcome Spring. The nature of the music is as gentle as Platero himself.
The performance will be mainly in Spanish, the original language of Jimenez book.
